U.S. Mint Announces That 2021 American Eagle Coins to Have Old and New Design
The U.S. Mint is slated to release multiple American Eagle gold and silver coins as part of the 2021 series. A few of these will be bearing the current original designs while the rest shall come out with the all-new approved reverses. The mint announced these new gold and silver coin designs on October 1st and planned to issue them around mid-2021. However, they did not make the details about the transition from the old to new designs public.
They have confirmed that at the time of the commencement of the selling of the American Eagle gold and silver bullion coins in January, the authorized purchasers will get the coins with the original obverse and reverse designs were introduced in 1986. In fact, the mint will continue with minting and selling the old design bullion coins until the coins bearing the new reverse design are officially released. Micahel White, the official spokesman for U.S. Mint, had this to say on October 21st, “We anticipate bullion coins with new designs will be released in mid-2021.”
Design Details
The 2021 version of the American Eagle silver dollars will bear an all-new version of sculptor Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 Walking Liberty half dollar obverse from alongside former U.S. Mint sculptor engraver par excellence John Mercanti’s original 1986 Heraldic Eagle reverse.
Weinman’s obverse is to be used for the bullion, and the proof collector versions bearing the new reverse are gearing up for launch in mid-2021. The new silver reverse, designed under the U.S. Mint’s auspices, is the handiwork of their infusion designer Emily Damstra. It showcases a lone eagle making a landing approach, bearing an oak branch, ostensibly to carry to its nest. The design was brought to life by the Mint medallic artist Michael Gaudioso, who completed the task before he retired from service.
The new silver coin reverse was chosen for the gold bullion coin by the Commission of Fine Arts. About the gold coin, the Striding Liberty decorating the Saint-Gaudens $20 1907 gold double eagles, which was adapted for the 1986 Golden American Eagles eagle, will get a new lease of life with the first of the original legislated family of Eagles as conceived by artist Miley Busiek Frost.
The U.S. Mint will introduce the gold coin with the new reverse design in the middle of next year. That will be accompanied by a new initiative of anti-counterfeiting measures being adopted at the production stage. The unveiling of the new American Eagle coin series marks the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Coins program. According to the Mint Director David J. Ryder, “These beautiful designs build on the United States Mint’s heritage of artistic excellence and fortify the American Eagle Coin Program’s status as an icon in the numismatic and art worlds.”
One of the major factors in redesigning the 2021 Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle is to incorporate all new anti-counterfeiting measures.
